چکیده

Antimicrobial resistance is an important patient safety issue related to inappropriate antibiotic use. As part of the Infobutton project, we examined antibiotic prescribing-related information needs of clinicians using CPOE. During 3 hours of observation, 20 information needs were observed, 74% were met. Understanding the information needs of clinicians related to antibiotic prescribing may help identify methods to meet information needs via the Infobutton manager and thereby improve the judicious use of antibiotics.

A Behavioral Evaluation of the Transition to Electronic Prescribing in a Hospital Setting

The impact of Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) on the dependent variables of medication-order compliance and time to first dose of antibiotic was investigated in this quasi-experimental study of a naturally-occurring CPOE intervention. The impact of CPOE on compliance and time to first dose was assessed by comparing measures of these variables from the intervention site and a non-equiv...

The epidemiology of prescribing errors: the potential impact of computerized prescriber order entry.

BACKGROUND Adverse drug events (ADEs) are the most common cause of injury to hospitalized patients and are often preventable. Medication errors resulting in preventable ADEs most commonly occur at the prescribing stage. OBJECTIVES To describe the epidemiology of medication prescribing errors averted by pharmacists and to assess the likelihood that these errors would be prevented by implementi...

Electronically Prescribing: A new Policy in Iranian Hospitals

Medication Errors (MEs) as one of the most important medical errors in hospitals are common, expensive, and sometimes harmful to patients. Several strategies such as Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and wristband barcoding are used for decreasing MEs. The role of new technologies is emphasized in the policies and planning in the health system in Iran. Worldwide, CPOE is a new technology...

Evaluating health information technology's clinical effects.

In 2009 the federal government appropriated $34 billion in stimulus-related funding to promote the "meaningful use" of health information technology among Medicare and Medicaid providers and hospitals. One of the key elements of this technology is the adoption of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems for inpatient drug prescribing. The potential for CPOE to improve prescribing patte...

Errors and electronic prescribing: a controlled laboratory study to examine task complexity and interruption effects

OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of interruptions and task complexity on error rates when prescribing with computerized provider order entry (CPOE) systems, and to categorize the types of prescribing errors. DESIGN Two within-subject factors: task complexity (complex vs simple) and interruption (interruption vs no interruption). Thirty-two hospital doctors used a CPOE system in a computer labo...
